Our number one goal at DollarSprout is to help readers improve their financial lives, and we regularly partner with companies that share that same vision. Some of the links in this post may be from our partners. Here’s how we make money.

Convenience has become increasingly important to people these days.

Given how busy our schedules have become, it’s easier to have packages, groceries, restaurant meals, and prescriptions delivered instead of using our limited free time to run errands.

If you’re looking for a way to make some extra cash, you can take advantage of this demand and make deliveries on the side. You can then use this side income to work towards other financial goals, add to your monthly budget, or use it as treat yourself money.

If you’re familiar with your local area, or spend a lot of time in your car, you can turn that into a side hustle delivering things. You’ll typically work as an independent contractor, set your own hours, and can deliver one or several types of items.

Make Money Delivering Food

When people are busy, the last thing they want to do is go grocery shopping or spend a few hours at a restaurant waiting for a meal. So they turn to food delivery services.

1. Instacart

Instacart homepage screenshot

Instacart was founded in 2012 and offers same-day grocery delivery and pick-up services. To use Instacart, customers shop from local grocery stores like Kroger and Aldi online and via the Instacart app.

Once they finish shopping, they can request for a personal shopper to pick up and deliver their order to them the same day. Unless they have an annual membership, they’ll pay a delivery fee, which varies based on the time of day.

How to Get Started

Enter your first name, last name, email, phone number, and ZIP Code on Instacart’s online application. After you do, you’ll get a text with a link so you can download the Instacart app. When you download the app, you can become a full-service or in-store shopper and choose orders that fit your schedule.

As a full-service shopper, you’ll shop for orders at a local grocery store and deliver them to customers at their requested time. Once you state you’re available to shop on the app, you’ll get order notifications you can accept or reject.

If you accept an order, you’ll visit the store selected by the customer and shop their grocery list. You’ll use Instacart’s preloaded debit card to check out and drive to the customer’s location to complete the job.

You also have the option to work as an in-store shopper. Rather than shopping and delivering the groceries to the customer’s home, you’ll shop for the items and prepare the order for the customer to pick up on their own. It provides a little more flexibility, especially for those without a vehicle.

Requirements

To become an Instacart full-service shopper, you must:

  • Be least 18 years old.
  • Be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Have access to a vehicle and smartphone.
  • Lift 50 pounds without any help.

To become an in-store shopper, you must have the same requirement as above with the exception of a vehicle.

Other Ways to Make Money Delivering Stuff

While groceries, restaurant meals, and packages are some of the most popular items to get delivered, there are plenty of other things you can deliver. Senior citizens and disabled individuals who can’t make it to their local pharmacy may pay you to deliver prescription medications to their homes.

If you don’t mind heavy lifting, delivering furniture or appliances is another option. Many stores work with third-party logistics companies that hire independent contractors to deliver these types of larger items.

You can also land a gig delivering legal documents to law firms, balloons or flowers from a florist, or laundry and linens to hospitals and other institutions. You can even find work driving cars from one state to another. There’s no shortage of delivery jobs available. Search delivery jobs in your area to find opportunities near you.

Other Things to Consider If You’re Trying to Make Money Delivering

Before you start to apply for and accept delivery jobs, there are certain things you should keep in mind.

Extra Car Expenses

Since most delivery jobs require you to use your car, you’ll need to ensure it’s in tip-top shape. This means you’ll need to stay on top of gas fill-ups as well as oil changes, tire rotations, and other maintenance and repair services.

Insurance Costs

Most companies require that their delivery drivers have an individual car insurance policy (and possibly other types of insurance) and are compliant with the insurance regulations in their state. If you can’t afford your current policy or believe it’s too expensive, do some research and find a more affordable insurance option.

Personal Safety

While delivery driving can give you the chance to get out and about in your community, it can also be dangerous. You never know what types of people you may encounter while you’re on the job, so it’s important to be mindful of your surroundings. If someone says or does something that puts you in danger or makes you feel uneasy, don’t hesitate to contact the police.

Fees and Commissions from Apps

Just like all businesses, the goal of these apps and companies is to make money. To do so, they often take a cut of your earnings.

Before you accept a delivery job, find out what fees and commissions will be taken out of your pay. This can help you avoid unwanted or unexpected financial surprises and ensure the jobs you take are worth your time.

Earned Income vs. Time Spent Delivering

Making deliveries takes time. You have to accept a job, visit a place to get the order or package, and drive to the customer’s destination to deliver it. Do the math and make sure that every job you take is worth your time. It doesn’t make sense to accept a delivery job if your time commitment exceeds your pay.

Taxes

If you work as an independent contractor making deliveries, taxes won’t be taken out of your paycheck. Instead, you’ll be responsible for paying your own taxes, so be sure to set a percentage of your earnings aside for them. It’s a good idea to speak to an accountant who can estimate how much you may owe.

You Don’t Necessarily Need a Car to Make Money with Deliveries

Many people think they can’t make money delivering things unless they have a car. The reality is this isn’t true. You may be able to make deliveries with a scooter, bike, or even on foot. Also, if you land a gig with a delivery company, they may provide you with a vehicle or give you the chance to rent or borrow one.

While delivering food and other items is a potentially lucrative side hustle, you might find it’s not for you. If that happens, there are still plenty of other apps you can use to make money.
